It’s incredibly easy to make small changes in your life to work towards a healthier lifestyle. At Shafali, we put a high priority on health and always try to find out the best ways to eat better, get more exercise, and reduce stress. As we learn more, we noticed that it’s easiest to make these changes when you stick to the number 1 rule. That’s it – the “#1” rule. This means that if you think small, like a teeny tiny number 1, it’s possible to become a healthier you.
Here are some ways that you can improve your overall physical and mental health with only one little number.
With only 1 minute, you can accomplish so much for your body. Take 1 minute out of your day to accomplish 60 seconds worth of exercise. Try 1 minute of jumping jacks or running on the spot during commercial breaks or while cooking dinner.
If you have a few more minutes to spare, and the opportunity to get outside, try running around your block for 1 minute and then walking for 1 minute. Continue these intervals for as long as you want – but even 10 minutes is better than nothing.
You can also take 60 seconds out of your day to do some deep breathing. At any time you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or frustrated take 1 minute to refocus and regain your mental strength. Take deep breaths, in and out, for 1 minute. This small amount of time will help improve your mental health and release some anxiety. This can be done even when you’re not stressed, but anytime you need a boost in the morning, afternoon, or evening.
This is probably the best use of the number 1 your body and mind could benefit from. In only 1 hour you can take in a great workout. While most people say they don’t have the time to exercise, let alone an hour, it’s actually really easy to sneak into your day. You can go for a walk – with your dog, your family, or yourself. This hour of walking with improve your heart, your mind, and your waistline. Also, if you just can’t get away from your favourite show or if the rain is keeping you inside, you can spend an hour cleaning, dancing or playing with your kids. If one hour is still too much time for you to spare, try breaking it up throughout the day. Fifteen minutes, four times a day, or two half-hour chunks.
If you’d rather spend time improving your mind, try getting 1 more hour of sleep. This can be difficult to do, but if you go to bed 45 minutes earlier and wake up 15 minutes earlier it can make a world of difference. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest factors in reducing your mental health, productivity, and triggering illnesses. So, hit the hay a little earlier and see the benefits.
If your body is craving a little relaxation, try meditating or disconnecting from technology for 1 hour. Spend some time reading, preparing healthy meals for the week, listening to music, or organizing your things. Getting away from the TV, your cell phone, or your computer might be more helpful than you think.
A day can go by so quickly, especially with work and kids and errands to run. Before you know it, you’re ready for bed. So with only 1 day, try changing up your diet. Even if you can’t wait for the next day to arrive, with only 24 hours you can help your body in so many ways. For instance, try going meat-free! We’re all so used to our steak-and-potatoes or bacon-and-eggs meals, but did you know that reducing your intake of meat can help improve your health? Eating less meat can help your digestive system, help lower your cholesterol, and reduce your risk of getting cancer. Just 1 day of cutting out meat is worth it! Also, try going 1 day of doing a full-body cleanse. It’s great to clean out your body once in awhile and give it a break from all the foods we consume. All day long, drink fresh, purified water prepared at home. Try using ingredients such as pureed fruit or vegetables, lemon, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon to mix it up. It may be difficult to get through, but it’s only 1 day and it will give your body a nice break and a chance to rejuvenate itself. Hey, at least it’s not a week-long cleanse.
Try making 1 change every month to improve your health. This can be anything that you can commit to for 30 days straight to help you get healthier. You can try taking the stairs everywhere you go, parking in the furthest spot away from the store, reducing your portion sizes, or cutting out soda or juice. Remember, this is only for 1 month. But if you find that it becomes easy to continue doing, then stick with it! Next month, try something different.
Also, it’s important to make small changes along the way. If you have 1 more glass of water, 1 more piece of fruit, or 1 more helping of vegetables – t all adds up to lead to a healthier you.
